Haringey Council fines landlord of unlicensed HMO £2,500 after he let out the property to 7 unrelated tenants

The landlord had let his 3 storey unlicensed HMO property to the tenants, who were not related to each other, and was investigated by the council's private rented sector housing team.

Council officers also found that the kitchen facilities were inadequate for the number of occupants under Haringey's standards for HMOs and there was no adequate fire protection or detection system installed at the property.

Though the landlord appealed to the First Tier property tribunal, the tribunal upheld the council's enforcement penalty. The tenants can now consider applying for rent repayment orders (RROs).

Cllr. Dana Carlin, Cabinet Member for Housing Services, Private Renters and Planning, said "The council's HMO licensing scheme is there to protect residents and ensure they are living in homes that are safe, well managed, of good quality and most of all, compliant, ..... we will do everything we can to fight for renters' rights and to strengthen the quality of Haringey's private rented sector".
