Durham council selective licence fee "early bird" discount to lapse at end of July - late applicants risk enforcement action once property inspections commence

A discount on the £500 per property selective licence fee allowing landlords to operate a private rented property in the city will terminate at the end of this month.

The discount, one of a range of discounts applicable if certain criteria are met (which could see the fee reduced to £350), is designed to get as many landlords as possible to submit their licence applications before compliance inspections of licensable properties commence.

The application process opened in February this year and landlords who have not made their applications in time could be subject to financial penalties. In April Cllr. James Rowlandson, cabinet member for resources, investments and assets, said "The scheme is also about enabling us to better support landlords so that they can give the best service possible to their tenants and holding those who fail to meet the required standards to account."
