Doncaster council hands out fines to landlords in selective licensing "crackdown"

In an ongoing crackdown on non compliant landlords with properties inside Doncaster's Edlington selective licence area, the council has issued 5 fines to landlords for licence breaches. The council says the fines handed out ranged from £500 to £2,940 and were imposed on landlords who failed to provide licence "compliance documents" when requested by the council.
The council points out that the requirement to produce proper paperwork such as energy performance certificates or gas safety certificates (for example) when requested is a mandatory condition of the licence that is granted to a landlord under selective licensing.
This means that a total of 48 financial penalties have been imposed since the Edlington scheme started in 2018 and the council says that enforcement action is ongoing in the area alongside work in partnership with south yorkshire police and through neighbourhood regeneration projects.
Cllr. Joe Blackham said " ... all landlords should be fully aware of their legal obligations before they rent out any property. Where standards fall short ..... the council will not hesitate to enforce against those who fail in their legal duty to provide homes of a decent standard ......
We want to work with the majority of decent landlords, but we will not shy away from dealing with the small irresponsible minority."
