Birmingham City Council approves selective licence covering 25 wards

Birmingham council has approved a selective licence scheme which will cover up to 50,000 properties across 25 wards in the city and which is set to start on 1st April 2023. Because of the scheme's size it must now be approved by the Secretary of State, Michael Gove MP, and if that approval is granted then the scheme will become the largest selective licensing scheme in the country. The licence fee is set at £700 per property.

The council says that there is "significant support for the scheme from residents and businesses/organisations." and that responses to its public consultation included those from residents living outside the affected wards for their own areas to be included in the scheme.

Cllr. Shabrana Hussain (Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods at the council) said that free training will be made available for private sector landlords to make them aware of their responsibilities under the licensing scheme and that the scheme "will ensure that BCC [the council] has the powers to proactively identify private rented sector properties and join up with other services such as the police to tackle issues such as anti social behaviour ..."
