Legal Aid changes enabling people facing eviction to get free early legal advice before going to court come in to force

Changes to the former Housing Possession Court Duty Scheme came into force this week. The reforms mean that people facing eviction or repossession proceedings can get free early housing legal advice before going to court.
They will also be able to access advice and representation on the day of the court hearing.
The scheme is backed by £10 million in government funding with the Ministry of Justice saying that the aim is, ideally, to avoid the court proceedings altogether. Debt and welfare advice will also be accessible.
Other legal aid changes coming into force this week include further support for victims of domestic abuse.
