Manchester City Council is asking private rented sector landlords and members of the public to give their views on proposals for an expansion of selective licensing of private rented properties in the city.

The proposals would see the requirement brought in for landlords to apply for licences to operate single household rented properties across 8 areas covering 5 Wards of the city. The proposed new scheme would cover an estimated 1,122 privately rented homes. The consultation opened on 7th October and will close on 14th December 2022.

The council points out that selective licensing is already in operation across 7 other areas in the city in order to "help to help improve standards in the city's large private rented sector to ensure the homes have a positive impact on an area."

Cllr. Gavin White, executive member for housing and development, said "We are seeing the real and positive impact of selective licensing in the previously designated areas and it's satisfying that through our licensing schemes and subsequent investigative work our officers are uncovering serious issues that otherwise would have gone unnoticed."
