Newham Council selective licensing scheme gets third 5 year term after approval granted by Secretary of State at DLUHC

Covering 22 out of 24 wards in the borough, the council says that the granting of approval for a third consecutive selective licensing scheme is unprecedented. As a 2012 London Olympic Games host borough Newham received significant central Government funding for its first selective licensing scheme 15 years ago.
The two wards not covered by the renewed licensing scheme are the Royal Victoria ward and the Stratford Olympic Park ward. All private rented sector landlords renting out single household properties in the remaining 22 wards will be required to apply for and obtain a licence to operate their rental properties under the new scheme which comes into force from 1st June 2023. The council says that it will update all current licence holders "in the New Year" as to when it will start to take early licence applications which will attract a discounted fee.
Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, said that selective licences were required "to tackle poor property conditions, high levels of deprivation and antisocial behaviour. Protecting private renters and ensuring they live in safe and warm homes is a key component of the scheme and the council demands that landlords take maximum responsibility for maintaining effective and appropriate management of their properties".
The council also pointed out that its additional licensing scheme covering smaller HMO properties across 22 of the borough's 24 wards, expires on 31st December 2022 but is also being renewed.
