Debt advice charity says 66% of new clients in January 2022 rent their homes

The Debt advice charity Stepchange has said, in its January 2022 client insights report, (published in March) that two thirds of its new clients are renters with 35% in the private rented sector and 31% renting from a council or housing association. On top of those figures, the charity finds that 41% of their new clients are in full time employment.

In a warning to private sector landlords The Guild of Residential Landlords in its analysis of the figures quotes StepChange director of external affairs, Richard Lane, as saying "Debt advice services this year will be vital to help people navigate their best options but, the Government needs to implement better structural support too ... With arrears on priority bills becoming more common, 2022 is going to be a tough year for many."
