Post Grenfell fire Building Safety Bill - leaseholder protections from remediation costs factsheet published

The Govt has published a very comprehensive factsheet outlining the protections for leaseholders included in the Building Safety bill which, when it comes into law, will see (post Grenfell tragedy) primary responsibility for remediation costs fall on building developers rather than residential leaseholders.

The new Govt approach is based on 3 principles:

Industry must pay to fix the problems it is responsible for; Leaseholders must be protected and; there must be common sense in building safety risk assessments, speeding up the fixing of the highest risk buildings and stopping buildings being declared unsafe unnecessarily.

The factsheet covers both cladding and non cladding safety costs, how the protections work and which leaseholders will be covered by the protections as well as the cap on costs. There is also an FAQ section and "illustrative examples" that show how the protections will affect different leaseholders in different circumstances.
