The Dept for Levelling up, Housing & Communities has published guidance for private rented sector landlords and their tenants on the smoke and carbon monoxide alarm (amendment) regulations 2022 which come into force on October 1st this year.

After that date a landlord who hasn't complied with the regulations can be fined £5000 by the local authority in whose area the rental property is located. Whilst the guidance is not published as legal advice the document states that, if in doubt, a landlord should contact the relevant local authority or fire & rescue service for advice.

The guidance document can be accessed here and separate guidance is available for local authorities
