"Worst of the worst" private landlord fined £45,000 after prosecution by Waltham Forest Council
A private sector landlord in Ilford has been fined $45,000 and ordered to pay council costs of almost £14,500 with the District Judge at Stratford Magistrates Court stating that the landlord had caused a "significant degree of harm" to his tenants. There were 10 violations of housing act law including operating an unlicensed HMO. The Managing Agents, Eden Homes, were also fined £3,700 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge and £1,500 towards the council's costs.
Cllr Louise Mitchell said that tenants had been living in "appalling and dangerous" conditions, that the landlord had harassed his tenants after they had made complaints and that the council will "use the full extent of [its] powers to crack down on landlords who try to exploit their tenants" adding that the case showed "the very real need" for landlords to be "registered".
