Great Yarmouth selective licensing scheme sees £67,500 in fines issued to landlords and receives praise from residents

One landlord in Great Yarmouth was issued with a £15,000 fine and 7 other received fines of £7,500 each for selective licensing scheme breaches. Great Yarmouth council says that it is also investigating a further 36 landlords whilst 24 landlords have had their selective licences revoked.
A programme of over 1,300 property inspections carried out under the scheme found 4,850 issues at properties within the scheme's designated area including missing smoke alarms, severe damp and missing widow latches.
Residents interviewedsaid they approved of the scheme and the property inspections because even though they themselves had good landlords they were aware of other tenants whose homes needed work done after being inspected and that the scheme kept people safe as "you don't know what could happen if people weren't checking".
